More Than Just robots!

For our team, as well as others, FLL is more than just robots. It’s about creating friendships, learning problem solving skills, learning public speaking skills, and much much more!

FLL has helped some of our team members move on to FTC after having aged out. FLL has helped with problem solving, which is a helpful skill in FTC. When some of our team members moved on FTC, they were able to solve robot problems with less difficulty because they already had the experience from FLL.

How FLL Has Impacted Our Team:

FLL has helped me with my public speaking -Claire

It has helped me to become a better leader and to include others -Maria Jose

It’s helped me with problem solving skills and I’ve learned lots about building! -Michael

After updating the website and working with photoshop for our t-shirts I became interested in graphic design. -Katie

FLL has taught me how to persevere even when things are tough. -Joseph

This years challenge is about space! Its way out there!

Have your team identify a human physical or social problem faced during a long duration space exploration within our Sun’s solar system and propose a solution. Here is the website for more information if you like: http://firstlegoleague.org/challenge

This years Core Values are:

Discovery: We explore new skills and ideas.

Innovation: We use creativity and persistence to solve problems.

Impact: We apply what we learn to improve our world.

Inclusion: We respect each other and embrace our differences.

Teamwork: We are stronger when we work together.

Fun: We enjoy and celebrate what we do.

We got Core Values callback at State!!!!!!

Which means we won Core Values in our division!!!!!!!!

Some Examples of How We Use Our FLL Core Values outside/inside of FLL:

Discovery [we explore new skills and ideas]:

I learned how to add and subtract improper fractions.

I learned the START-GO operation of a snowmobile.

Innovation [we use creativity and persistence to solve problems]:

I was in a piano recital and I messed up in some of my pieces and the I used persistence and creativity to keep on going in my pieces.

I used creativity and persistence to complete my timeline for school.

Impact [we apply what we have learned to improve our world]:

I applied my knowledge of measuring from math to bake a cake for my aunt’s birthday.

I applied what I had learned in math to help my friends and siblings.

Inclusion [ we respect each other and embrace out differences]:

I was dancing with my older sister when my younger sister wanted to dance with me. I respected her and embraced our differences, she’s much smaller than me, and danced with her as well.

I invited some people to come play with us and respected and embraced their amazing personalities!

Teamwork [we are stronger when we work together]:

My dad was needing help setting up a tent for our 4H party. I asked my brother and we both helped him to get the tent up.

My family and I worked together to set up our train set.

Fun [we enjoy and celebrate what we do]:

I was in charge of getting exercise for our dog and I made it fun by including other family members in a game of soccer with our dog and had fun!

Me and my family had a dart war and had fun!

Our robot, PROTECH3272, has a wheel guard to keep the wheels from catching on things. We have bicycle wheels for the front wheels and 2 marbles for the back wheels. We have two large attachment motors one on the front and one on the back. We have 3 sensors: 2 touch sensors for squaring up on the walls and 1 gyro for helping the robot go straight instead of going all wacky.

Our Missions:

Run 1: Ramp and Space travel loads 1 and 2, and solar panel (64)

Run 2: Extraction, Getting Astronaut (26)

Run 3: Escape Velocity, placing Astronaut, & Observatory (66)

Run 4: Crater Crossing, 3D Printer, 2 satellites, food growth, & drop water (78)

Total=234!!!!

We got 220 at State!

This attachment/run does the ramp and space travels and solar panel!

The front of the attachment comes off, we just push it out there and it lifts the ramp and we use our solar panel arm to trigger the placing of the space travel and crew onto the ramp. This mission is VERY consistent!

The PROTECH3272!

This attachment does the Observatory, placing Astronaut Gerhard, and Escape Velocity! The bot pushes the bottom attachment out and the hammer slams down onto Escape Velocity and the arm in the back places the Astronaut Gerhard. We have a foldable arm that folds out when we start to drive out of base and that foldable arm pushes the observatory! It has been lots of fun!

At State, we were in the top 4 highest robot scores overall for the 3 rounds in the morning at the end of the day!!!!!!!!!!

Our Problem: Astronauts must exercise 3 hours a day while they are in space and that takes time away from doing their jobs. They exercise 3 hours a day to help their bone atrophy.

Our Solution: An adjustable exercise brace that astronauts can wear to exercise while doing their other jobs. This way it saves time and they don’t have to spend 3 hours each day exercising.

We shared our Solution with:

  1. 4+ FLL Teams
  2. Friends
  3. Family
  4. People on our Website (like all ya’ll!)
  5. An FTC Team
  6. Our Homeschool co-op.
  7. Judge’s at tournaments

It was so much FUN!!!!!!!

We can’t wait ’til next year!!!!

We, the JP2 Fireworks in our first year, Hydro Dynamics, created:

Our Problem:

There is a lack of knowledge about what individuals can do on their own to improve water quality!

Our Solution:

We’ve created a fun and easy to play card game to teach people of all ages what they can do on their own to improve water quality!!!

Our card game is called ‘Cool Watery Facts!’. If you want, you can print a free PDF file and it has instructions on how to print out our card game. Here is the link: https://www.shercofirst.org/CoolWateryFacts.pdf

JP2 Programmers Past Projects:

  1. We created a brochure about Diabetic Alert Dogs for diabetics.
  2. We presented our solution to Diabetic Educators at Children’s hospital, and they invited us back to present at their Parents Support Group for Children with Diabetes.
  3. Shared with parent support groups on Facebook.
  4. Shared with 6 diabetics.
  5. We shared with parents of diabetics.
  6. Sent our brochure to Park Nicollet.
  7. Created a survey asking people if they knew about Diabetic Alert Dogs.
  8. We posted the brochure on Facebook.
  9. We translated the brochure into Spanish because the majority for diagnoses with diabetes are hispanic.

We are very excited about our solution and we would like to share the brochure with you! Here is the link: https://www.shercofirst.org/DiabeticAlertDogsBrochure.pdf We also created a Spanish version of the brochure because according to statistics, Hispanics are twice as likely to be diagnosed with diabetes! We had a professional medical translator help us translate the D.A.D brochure into Spanish. Link to Spanish brochure: https://www.shercofirst.org/DiabeticAlertDogsBrochureSpanish.pdf

We are happy that we have, Maria Jose, Katie, Michael, Joseph, and Gabe on the JP2 Fireworks! Maria Jose and Katie were on the JP2 Programmers team, most people from that team aged out except Katie and Maria Jose. This is Michael’s, Gabe’s and Joseph’s first year!!! This is going to be exciting!

We have created a fun & easy to play card game! It would mean a lot to us if you print this out and play it! Here is the link: http://shercofirst.org/CoolWateryFacts.pdf

On this PDF file it has instructions on how to print this out.

This Years Challenge is: Hydro Dynamics

The Project Challenge is: How find, use, transport, and dispose of water. Sounds super cool! Right? 😉

The Robot Challenge is: This super awesome board that we are making a robot for to complete the missions on the board! We’ll have a picture soon of the board and our awesome robot! 😉

The Core Values Challenge is: are you ready? Okay here it is! We as a team get to solve problems working together. And have an awesomely fun time! 😉

We have been on 6 tours! Here are the tours we have been on!:

Mississippi Watershed Management Organization, We learned: That no one should swim in a lake or river for at least 1-2 days after it rains because storm runoff contains pollution that ends up in the water in higher concentrations.

Coon Rapids Dam, We learned: The Dam was rebuilt so many times.

Maple Grove Water Treatment Plant, We learned: The water Maple Grove gets from the aquifer is very clean and drinkable as is.

Elk River Waste Water Treatment Plant,  We learned: The Waste Water Treatment plant cleans water from the sewers before putting it back in the Mighty Muddy Mississippi River.

Eastman Nature Center, We learned: A big problem is garbage going into the ocean.

Heidi’s Growhaus, We learned: Rain Gardens help to clean the water before the water eventually drains in the river and it’s important to design the rain garden with the right soil, plants, and location.

All these tours have been super fun and we have learned a lot! We have been working on our skit, and some missions! It’s been fun!

We have two missions done for our robot! Our robot’s name is FireBot. We are using our second robot. our first robot was not symmetrical, and lop-sided, so we built a new one.  This is fun! 🙂 We have also been working on our skit! thanks to our Fearless Team Captain, the skit is done! We have made nicknames for each of our team members. Fearless Team Captain, Fearless Helpmate, Builderific 1, Builderific 2, and Remarkable Programmer. Our Remarkable programmer is hard at work right now, getting more missions done. Fearless Team Captain has helped with the skit, boards, and the card game! Builderific 1 and Builderific 2 are like glued together, they have been helping build and make boards! Fearless Helpmate has been helping with building and programming, and also helps with the skit. 🙂 Our team wouldn’t be the same without one of these team members! 🙂

At Regionals: We won the Core Values Award and 1st Place for Head-to-Head in our division! It was really exciting because we’ve never made it the far in Head-to-Head before! This tournament we just enjoyed ourselves, cheered our and other teams on, had candy, and we moved on. This was just a really fun tournament!!!!

Here’s a hint when your at a tournament: Just have fun and enjoy yourselves! It’s really fun!

Sectionals was fun! we are moving on to State! We also enjoyed ourselves at this tournament as well! We did not get any awards and we didn’t make it very far in head-to-head this time, but it was really fun!!! 🙂

At State we all had a blast! We made it to the Semi-Finals in head-to-head! We aren’t going to worlds and we didn’t get any awards. But the most important thing is that we had a ton of fun!!!

We will soon have more pictures of the tournaments!

Thank you to all the volunteers who have made all these tournaments possible!! Thank you!!!

Our first robot was lopsided and not symmetrical. we solved those and other problems that we had in our first bot with our second bot, Firebot!

Our robots name is Firebot. We have 5 missions done and consistent,

We have 2 large motors (the wheels), 1 large motor (attachment motor), and a medium motor. We have 3 sensors: 2 color sensors and 1 gyro sensor. We have a wheels guard that guards the wheels from catching on things and for gliding along the wall. We use some slip on attachments.

  1. We are a team
  2. We do the work to find solutions with guidance from our coaches and mentors
  3. We know our coaches and mentors don’t have all the answers we learn together
  4. We honor the spirit of friendly competition in everything we do
  5. What we discover is more important than what we win
  6. We share our experiences with others
  7. We display gracious professionalism  and coopetition in everything we do
  8. We have fun!!!!
